The Morelia Football club was originally founded in 1924 on the outskirts of the city, under the name Oro gold. It was not until 1951, when Oro Morelia reached the Second Division Football Championship, that they changed their name to Club Deportivo Morelia A.C. They were dubbed Team amarillo yellow during their beginnings in professional football. They had their first moment of glory during the 1956 57 season when they won the Second Division sub championship and the first ascent of the Michoacan club to the maximum national circuit. In the 1973 74 tournament 32 Morelia businessmen completely restructured the club. They changed the name of the team to Club Atlampampeacutetico Morelia S.A. de C.V. The dreams of the last 13 years would finally come true during the 1980 81 season when Morelia ascended to First Division. By 1985 the club had qualified for five straight liguillas league championships. During the 1986 87 campaign, they finished first in their group and fourth in the general bracket in a tournament fought by 21 teams. In February 1996, Televisiampampoacuten Azteca bought 70% of the clubs shares, bringing a new era of football to Morelia. From the history of the Purampampeacutepecha Monarchy and because being a monarch means being 1, the club was christened as Monarcas Morelia The Team of Strength. In the 2000 winter tournament, they defeated Santos Laguna to advance for the first time to the grand final a dream come true.
